Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are is ostensibly a book about a subfield of ethology - animal cognition. It turns out to actually be about a lot more things than that, as "animal cognition" and the history of its study touches on a lot of different scientific fields and the various approaches, methodologies, and ideologies they've had in the past. Before we jump into talking about how the book is useful and why we might care about it in other fields, I want to say right up front that Are We Smart Enough is first and foremost a book about the joy of discovering surprising and interesting things in the natural world, and it reminded me of poring over Zoobooks and the like when I was a kid. Are you looking for a well-written and enjoyable popular science book that will consistently have you going "wow, that's really cool!"? If so, you don't really need the rest of this review, but there's a lot of good stuff in there to unpack.

Thanks to everyone who commented on Zounds! It’s Zulresso and Zuranolone and on the followup Progesterone Megadoses Might Be A Cheap Zulresso Substitute. I’m constantly impressed by the expertise of commenters here and on how much better the biomedical comment threads are compared to some of the others. Among the things I learned:
— Metacelsus (who writes the blog De Novo) doubts the price estimates I posted:
— Douglas (who writes the blog A Mindful Monkey) clears up some mechanism details I missed:

…Importantly, I think the nature of non-additive genetics is widely misunderstood. If you read the wikipedia article on epistasis, or Zuk et al. 2012, or any other discussion I’ve seen, you’ll get the idea that non-additive genetic effects happen for reasons that are very “organic”—things like genes for two different mutations of the same protein complex, or genes for two enzymes involved in the same metabolic pathway.
But that’s a very different mental image from things like multiple genes affecting the same protein complex, or the Zuk et al. 2012 “limiting pathway model”. In particular, given a gene × gene interaction, you can’t, even in principle, peer into a cell with a microscope, and tell whether the two genes are “interacting” or not. In that last example above, the thrill-seeking-related genes really don’t “interact” with the bone-strength-related genes—at least, not in the normal, intuitive sense of the word “interact”. Indeed, those two genes might never be expressed at the same time in the same cell….

This is the world of the Spring and Autumn Annals, and the Zuozhuan.
Who is Zhu Yifu? Who’s Duan? What’s all this about “overcoming”? Where does the moral deliberation come in? This canon badly needs meta, and the most notable of the ancient commentaries written for the Spring and Autumn Annals is the Zuozhuan. Ten times as long as the text it’s for, the Zuozhuan is the flesh on the Annals’ bare bones, one of the foundational works of ancient Chinese literature and history-writing in its own right.
…you have the Zuozhuan’s account of the year, mostly composed of elaborations upon the above entries, such as:

...!), and Steven Byrnes on how to reason about AI danger if this is true . - Even without a “foom” event, “slow” takeoff can be very fast! - If you want even more AI news, Zvi’s weekly newsletters (you might remember his old COVID newsletters) are very good. I like this one in particular because the URL collapses the title to “AI - 8 people can do reasonable things”, which is a good accidental summary of where we are right...
